An original watercolour painting of a Winter Landscape after Rowland Hilder. This was a watercolour demonstration of how to paint a winter landscape. It was an ideal subject to show my class who wanted to know how to paint a wintery sky, trees and simple architectural forms.

The first artist that I really began to study as a young, enthusiastic watercolourist was Rowland Hilder.  My parents used to buy a calendar every year called Artists Britain. It would always contain several outstanding paintings by Rowland Hilder. I found myself captivated by his work and decided to copy some of his paintings. It’s an exercise which I would advocate for anyone wishing to learn any painting technique. What I discovered was, my own paintings improved dramatically after these studies of Hilder’s work. I gradually began to develop my own style of painting.

In one of my watercolour classes at my Studio & Gallery in Ponteland.  I demonstrated how to paint skies and trees. As an example I did some paintings in the style of Rowland Hilder who is one of my early watercolour heroes. He was an expert at painting Watercolours of Kent, particularly in winter.

Rowland Hilder, artist teacher and author, was born (1905) in New York, United States, to Roland Hilder and his wife Kitty. Hilder’s parents were initially from Kent, and it is there to which the family returned.
