Meet Alan Reed

Over the last 40 years he has developed his own distinctive painting style that is instantly recognisable.

Alan's landscapes and cityscapes on this site are painted in his unique, fluid style. Alan Reed from Newcastle, Ponteland captures the atmosphere of different settings — from the drama of city life to the serenity and beauty of a rural landscape in watercolour or oils.

British artist Alan Reed was born in Northumberland into a family with a history of painting, and fell in love with watercolours at the age of 15.

He trained in art and design at Newcastle College and spent the early part of his career producing artist impressions of new building projects for architects.

Discover the beauty and atmosphere of the world through the art of Alan Reed. Each piece captures a unique sense of place — from tranquil landscapes to vibrant city scenes — painted with the precision, passion and light that define Alan's distinctive style.

Capturing Landscapes

For many years I've practised the regular discipline of life drawing to sharpen my skills at drawing from observation. Although I have specialised in watercolour for over 40 years, I also work in oils, charcoal, pencil, gold leaf and acrylic.

The Alan Reed Art Gallery was founded in 1996. Since then it has had a permanent exhibition of paintings on display. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity of exhibiting throughout the world including the UK, Scotland, USA, Italy, Oman and Kuwait.

My subjects are varied including landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, architecture and portraits. Recent commissions include works for the Lakes Distillery, projects in Oman, Mallorca and ancient Roman architecture. Early in my career the quality of my work received national recognition with the selection of a number of cityscapes in the Sunday Times watercolour competition for three successive years.

I was also shortlisted for Artist of the Year by Artists & Illustrators magazine in 2014.

With over 40 years of experience in teaching Art & Design, I offer private painting lessons for children and adults of all ages and stages.
