How Alan Reed's Limited Edition Prints Are Made

Every print in the collection starts life as an original painting by Alan Reed, a Northumberland born artist who has specialised in watercolour for over 40 years. Once a painting has been completed in the Ponteland studio, it is reproduced using fine art giclée printing on archival paper, so the detail, texture and richness of the original are carried through to the finished print.

Each one is hand signed and numbered by Alan and forms part of an exclusive edition. When an edition sells out, no more will be produced, which is why many collectors choose a print of a favourite scene as soon as it is released.

The artist behind the collection

Alan trained in art and design at Newcastle College and began his career producing artist impressions of new building projects for architects, before building a reputation for his fluid, atmospheric watercolours. His work has been selected for the Sunday Times watercolour competition for three successive years, and in 2013 he won The Artist's Prize in the Royal Watercolour Society Competition. He has also been shortlisted for Artist of the Year by Artists and Illustrators magazine and is a member of the Fine Art Trade Guild, the trade body that sets standards for the art and framing industry.

He has exhibited throughout the world, including the UK, Scotland, the USA, Italy, Oman and Kuwait, and the Alan Reed Art Gallery in Ponteland has held a permanent exhibition of his work since it was founded in 1996. His approach to painting is described in Theodora Philcox's book Landscapes in Watercolour, which features 23 leading watercolourists from around the world.

Framing, delivery and gifts

Orders can be placed online and are shipped across the UK, Europe and internationally, with secure wooden box packaging available for extra protection. A full range of bespoke framing is offered at the studio, so your chosen piece can be framed to suit your home. Framing is a good way to protect the archival paper from dust and damage, and Alan is happy to advise on mounts and mouldings that complement both the artwork and the room it will hang in. If you are local, you are welcome to view the collection in person at the Alan Reed Studio and Gallery in Ponteland, which is open by appointment on 01661 820626.

A signed print of a familiar Newcastle or Northumberland scene makes a thoughtful gift, and gift vouchers are also available if you would rather let someone choose for themselves. If you would like to own the painting that a print was made from, take a look at Alan's original paintings, many of which are still available.
