Roman Forum – Print

£159.00

For this particular view of the Roman Forum I awoke when it was still dark and walked briskly from our hotel room along the deserted streets of Rome to capture the first rays of sunlight striking the ancient columns of the Temple of Saturn.

I have to say, if you are visiting any busy city, it’s well worth the effort to get up early before the rest of the tourists take to the streets.

I wasted no time in whipping out my leather bound sketchbook to do a rapid watercolour study to get a feeling of the mood, light and general atmosphere of the Roman Forum. I used this sketch and my own reference photographs to paint the original watercolour from which this print has been taken from.

All about Painting in Italy

Read Alan Reed’s Painting blog where you will discover how to Paint in Italy on location.

I keep my sketchbook study simple, drawing rapidly with my brush and paint. In these situations I rarely use a pencil. Instead, I knock in the shapes and forms of the scene with blocks of colour, painting in necessary details with the fine point of the brush.

In quite a short space of time you have the beginnings of a composition. This can be developed further in the studio. The more studies you do, the more authenticity you can bring to your intended painting.

I’ve recently started using TikTok to create very short videos. I’ve also started to upload these to my Instagram account, so you can watch some of the stages of this painting in progress.
