An original watercolour painting on Clayton Street Newcastle upon Tyne. By keeping one side of the street in shadow, the sunlit street where the clients shop is, becomes the point of interest.
Carefully positioned figures bring life to Clayton Street.
Price unframed.
Clayton Street runs from the centre of Newcastle past the Grainger Market down into Clayton Street West. Clayton Street West has a junction with Westgate Road after which it continues on to end at a junction with Westmorland Road, near Central Station.
Clayton Street is named after John Clayton who was a town clerk in Newcastle in the 19th Century. He worked with builder Richard Grainger and architects, including John Dobson, to redevelop the centre of the Newcastle in a neoclassical style. Richard Grainger’s family home was at 36 Clayton Street West from 1842 -1861.
In 2024 I received a commission to paint a client’s shop on Clayton Street Newcastle. After several trips to Clayton Street at different times of the day, photographing different viewpoints, we decided on the view. An A4 watercolour study was the next step.
From the various photographs and the A4 study I was able to complete the commission which the client was delighted with.
Other original watercolours are available of Newcastle including this one titled Grey Street, Skyfall.
