We made a memorable trip to Italy in 2004 staying in an apartment with my parents. It was February so the temperatures were freezing, however most of the days were spent enjoying the intense winter sunlight.

As it was the Venetian Carnival, I was keen to paint the flamboyanlty coloured costumes but we also wanted to sample the fresh fish that can be enjoyed on Burano. We found a lovely restaurant and sat outside in the sunlight enjoying a delicious lunch. My dad always used to reminisce about his lunch there.

The Island of Burano is full of colour and I had painted the brightly coloured fishermen’s homes before. This time I wanted to paint something that was simple in terms of colour and composition. I positioned myself by a wall, looking into the low winter sunlight. This meant that the palette became more monochromatic with just a hint of colour in some of the buildings.

Venetian Lagoon Painting – Alan Reed

Burano is a vibrant fishing island in the Venetian Lagoon. It’s famous for its incredibly vibrant, colourful fishermen’s houses, intricate lace-making traditions, and as a popular, picturesque day trip from Venice.
Visitors love strolling its canals, taking photos of the brightly coloured homes visiting the Lace Museum, and enjoying fresh seafood. Easily reached by water bus (vaporetto), it’s a charming, walkable escape from the bustle of Venice, offering a glimpse into a quieter, traditional way of island life. 

Museum of Lace

Each house is painted a bright hue, a tradition that helped fishermen spot their homes in the mist. Burano has a rich history of delicate needle lace; you can see artisans at work and visit the Burano Museum of Lace.

It’s part of the lagoon’s island system, near Torcello. You can easily explore the entire island on foot in a short time, enjoying its canals and bridges. Known for seafood restaurants, it’s a relaxing spot for lunch or a Spritz.
