Regatta Sunset

An Original Watercolour Painting – Unframed

Regatta Sunset is a studio painting that was inspired by the times when Susan and I were able to enjoy the Regatta in Henley. We mingled in the Stewards Enclosure, rowed on the Thames and watched the rowers prepare for their races.

This painting brings back memories of those lovely summer days.

As the sun disappeared casting wonderful pinks across the sky that were reflected in the Thames, I was able to gather suitable reference of rowers at the end of their last practise before another day of racing.

It was important for me to carefully paint the figures in a simple yet accurate way to contrast the broader, more sweeping strokes for the sky and water.

Regatta Sunset Painting – Alan Reed

Henley Royal Regatta is undoubtedly the best-known regatta in the world, and a highlight of both the summer sporting calendar and the social season.

The Regatta attracts thousands of visitors over the week, and spectators are thrilled by over 400 races of an international standard, which can include Olympic rowers, as well as crews new to the event. This watercolour painting captures the Regatta Sunset perfectly.

In the late 1990’s I was invited to exhibit my watercolours at the Henley Royal Regatta.

Stewards Enclosure Henley Royal Regatta

This was an opportunity to paint some of the subjects that I really enjoyed, figures, skies, water and architecture, and above all to capture the mood and essence of a time and occasion.

Rowing is just tone of the sporting subjects that I’ve been fortunate enough to paint. Others include Winners 2025 which is Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup Celebrations.
