Dhows, Calm Waters – Original Watercolour Painting

£1,650.00

I’m fascinated by the way sunlight creates a lovely warm glow on these graceful fishing vessels.

I spent some time painting these Arabian dhows one afternoon on location in the harbour in Kuwait.

Kuwait

Kuwait emerged in the 18th century and has since been renowned for the skills of its gifted sailors and dhow-builders. Kuwait’s shipwrights became justly famed for the beauty, seaworthiness and practicality of their vessels.

The Kuwaiti boum became a symbol of Kuwait’s maritime prowess on all the dhow routes linking Arabia, Iran, India and East Africa.

This book for sale at the Arab British Centre describes in detail how Kuwaiti shipwrights built their vessels.  As with dhows everywhere, this was done entirely by hand and eye, without drawings of any kind. There are chapters on celebrated master builders and famous dhows, on sails, rigging and launching, and on tools and timber. There is also an extensive glossary of Kuwaiti nautical terms.

Paintings of Kuwait

In the late spring of 2009 I had an exhibition of my watercolour paintings in a gallery in Kuwait. I had previously travelled to Kuwait in the January. And did some sketchbook studies around the city and found myself fascinated by the old Mubarakiyya Souk. So I made a number of on the spot sketchbook studies which you can see in another blog post.
