I held a solo exhibition of my paintings in Marostica, Castello Vecchio in the winter of 2005. This is one of the paintings that I painted for the exhibition.
The exhibition was one of those occasions where I was completely immersed in the culture and way of life in this small town in the Veneto. The feedback that I received from the locals was very encouraging and positive.

From late November to January each year Marostica transforms into a fairytale setting.
The outdoor ice rink accompanied by the lighting of the Christmas tree and the city walls is truly magical.

During the exhibition I spent a week in Marostica, where I did watercolour demonstrations for the locals.
It was wonderful to hear the praises and comments about my work by Italians. As I know little Italian it was a constant but exciting challenge whilst communicating. Fortunately my wife Susan has a much larger vocabulary in Italian than me so we managed very well between us.
It’s over 100 years since the Marostica Human Chess Game was first played, but it remains as thrilling a spectacle as ever, with the age-old flavour of a timeless love story.

Born from the theatrical script by Mirko Vucetich, the famous Chess Game tells the tale of the beautiful Lionora the castellan’s daughter, whose hand is decided by a game of chess.
On one side, hundreds of citizens create a unique performance; on the other, a cutting-edge theatrical production with breathtaking sets, advanced technologies, lights, and sounds that immerse the audience in a magical atmosphere.
Against the backdrop of the city walls, with the Castello Inferiore as a stunning stage, a grand amphitheater with 3600 numbered seats welcomes spectators for four unforgettable evenings.
