In this new watercolour of Newcastle’s Grainger Town, Grey Street glistens in the winter sun. Morning commuters make their way past the burgundy screens of the now closed Pret a Manger. The pavement is still wet, so reflections add further interest to the scene. In my painting of Grey Street, Summer Rain, I’ve also captured the wet pavement, but the effect is different.
Grey Street features heavily in my Newcastle Art. However, I purposely aim to make sure that the paintings are all quite different from one another. If you look through my growing collection, you will see views taken from Emerson Chambers looking down the street. You will also see that I’ve painted the street looking up towards Grey’s Monument.
I always make a point of adding figures to the painting too. It’s the people darting in and out of the shadows that bring life to the painting. In this particular watercolour I’ve actually made some short videos of me painting some of the figures. These have been uploaded to my TikTok, Instagram and Facebook accounts.
The original painting can be seen at my Studio & Gallery in Ponteland.
