Eigg and Rum

Original price was: £2,750.00.Current price is: £2,500.00.

I only had time to take some photographs before the sun set behind Eigg and Rum. I returned the following morning when it was bright and sunny and painted two watercolours on Camusdarach beach for further reference for this studio painting.

I’ve painted another version of the scene titled Eigg and Rhum which is available as a limited edition print.

Hebrides

Eigg and Rum are two very distinct islands in the inner Hebrides known for their unique landscapes, geology, and wildlife; Rum is a large National Nature Reserve with dramatic peaks and Kinloch Castle. Eigg is famous for its vibrant community-owned status, the striking An Sgurr pitchstone peak, and “singing sands,” both offering contrasting but beautiful Hebridean experiences.

Local Hero

This watercolour painting features both islands Eigg and Rum in the background of the beach at Camusdarach, famous for its inclusion in the film Local Hero.
Although the village that was used in the film is on the east coast of Scotland, the beach featured is on the west coast. After seeing the film, I wanted to go there and create a painting in keeping with the film and the wonderful music by Mark Knopfler. The main theme from the film is played at the start of Newcastle United’s home games.
It’s a long drive from Newcastle, and by the time we checked in to a bed and breakfast in Mallaig, the sun was not far from setting. When we finally arrived, there was only a few folk there. The only sound was a violin being played by a young lady sitting in the dunes overlooking the sea.
This was the scene I wanted to capture. I only had time to take some photographs before the sun set behind Eigg and Rum. I returned the following morning when it was bright and sunny and painted two watercolours on the beach for further reference.
