Bassano del Grappa
An original Bassano del Grappa Painting in watercolour inspired by several trips to Italy. Bassano del Grappa is known for its Ponte Vecchio and the strong Italian liquor Grappa.
The most famous view of Bassano is of its principal landmark, the Ponte degli Alpini, also known as the Ponte Vecchio (‘Old Bridge’). At the western end of the bridge is a the Museo degli Alpini (entered through the tavern above). This is a lovely stretch of street with benches to admire the views of the mountains: you shouldn’t leave Bassano del Grappa without strolling along this amphitheatre. Grappa
Grappa is made from pomace aka the skins, seeds and stems left over from winemaking. Sure, it may sound like grappa is basically made from the scraps of wine but that’s not the case. “It is a tradition that is typical of ‘Italian thrift’, because you don’t waste anything”. Many people think of pomace as the waste from winemaking but the skin is the best part of the grape – it has the most aroma and flavors.
Grappa has a higher ABV (alcohol by volume) than wine. Wine has an average ABV of 12% while grappa must be between 35-60% in order to be sold; most clock in around 37.5%. By comparison, vodka, rum and tequila are generally 40%.
Using the right grappa glass is key. A good grappa glass is generally tall and narrow with a slightly wider opening at the top, to allow for the aromas to be enjoyed.
