In October 2026 I was giving a talk at a Private Club about the art related work I do in prisons. One of the projects I’ve played a part in developing is the “In Cell” 12 Week Art Course for disengaged prisoners through the North East Charity Junction 42.
For two weeks of the course the prisoners can learn how to paint in watercolours. One week is Painting Landscapes, the other is Painting Seascapes. One of the scenes for the seascapes theme is a view similar to this of Bamburgh Beach with the Castle silhouetted against the early morning sky.
I began my talk with showing the guests the preliminary stages by doing two washes, one of yellow, the other of Rose Madder. Unfortunately the paint took longer to dry than I anticipated, so I was unable to paint anything else that evening.
I was keen to complete the painting this week so that the guests could see the completed watercolour.
Bamburgh Beach is a wide sandy shore on the Northumberland coast at Bamburgh that lies beneath the dramatic silhouette of Bamburgh Castle. Look over the sea to get great views toward Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands. The beach runs roughly three miles, backed by shifting sand dunes, and is commonly used for long walks, birdwatching and beachcombing, with dogs permitted.
On a hot sunny summers day it is never really crowded, but on a winter morning as the sun is rising, you often have the beach to yourselves.
