Tyneside Cinema Newcastle Paintings – Alan Reed

This original oil painting, painted on 22 carat gold leaf on canvas board has recently been completed in my studio.

It’s a lively painting capturing folk on their way to the Tyneside Cinema along High Friar Lane. The gold leaf helps to capture the artificial light reflected in the wet pavement.

Tyneside Cinema

This old Art Deco building in Newcastle opened in 1937. After TV it closed its doors in 1968 but was revived by the British Film Institute and later saved by a dedicated filmgoers group and community fundraising. It has now become the UK’s last surviving newsreel theatre still operating as a cinema, now a beloved independent venue known for its varied programming thriving arts hub and classic style. 

A registered charity which aims to enrich people’s lives by thinking differently about and through film. Striving to provide a platform for marginalised members of our community, we’re passionate about all aspects of film and its potential to educate.
