The Venetian Carnival is a spectacle full of colour and drama. Venetian Carnival – Rosso captures the essence of this spectacular festival.

The masked figure dressed in red stands in front of the Bridge of Sighs. I’ve deliberately kept the Venetian architecture understated to keep the focus on the figure.

I’ve been fortunate enough to be in Venice on two occasions when I’ve been able to gather reference for a whole body of new paintings. Another one of these paintings is Jester which is also available as a limited edition print.
Most of the other watercolours are much smaller studies, around 7″ x 5″ image size.
It’s usually a very cold time during the festival, often misty with thick fog. This just seems to add more mood and mystery to the ocassion.

The Venetian Carnival is a spectacle full of colour and drama. Venetian Carnival – Rosso captures the essence of this spectacular festival.

The Venetian Carnival (Carnevale di Venezia) is a world famous event in Venice which showcases its opulent costumes, elaborate masks, masquerade balls, and public spectacles, held in the weeks leading up to Lent (usually February/March).

Venetian Costumes

With roots tracing back centuries, it allows participants to enjoy anonymity and revelry before the fasting period, featuring historic Baroque styles, street performers, and a unique atmosphere with costumed figures throughout the city and canals.

I’ve been fortunate enough to be in Venice on two occasions when I’ve been able to gather reference for a whole body of new paintings.

Most of these figurative studies have been very small around 7″ x 5″ image size but I have painted a few larger pieces including this piece 21″ x 14″.
