My late father has been painting St Andrews for decades. Over the years he has built up a fine collection of scenes that capture the history, atmosphere, mood and drama of the Royal and Ancient.
This is an iconic scene that any golfer who has played at St Andrews can relate to. Three golfers cross the tiny Swilkan Bridge to complete their round of golf. The familiar buildings are bathed in warm evening sunlight. Long shadows stretch across the course, helping to define its features.

The Old Course
Golf is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you mention St Andrews. Golf has been played at St Andrews Links for 600 years. The Old Course is the oldest golf course in the world.
Three golfers cross the Swilcan Bridge, a Roman arch-styled stone bridge that spans the Swilcan Burn that dissects both the first and 18th holes of the famous course. It is believed to date back some 600-plus years.
Swilcan Bridge
Some say that the Swilcan Bridge was originally built to aid shepherds taking their animals across the water. I doubt that anyone involved in its construction could have predicted the fame that such a simple stone structure would achieve all these centuries later.
British Open
It’s any golfers dream, to cross this small but famous bridge with the knowledge of all the great golfers that have gone before them. My father also painted an art deco poster for the British open that was held at St Andrews in 2000.
