I painted several sketchbook watercolours at the entrance of the Mubarakiya Souk Kuwait before tackling this larger studio painting on handmade watercolour paper.

I’ve attached one of my sketchbook studies to show the progression from “en plein air” work to the studio piece which can be seen at my Studio & Gallery in Ponteland.

Entrance to the Mubarakiya Souk, Kuwait

I painted several sketchbook watercolours at the entrance of the souk in Kuwait, peering into the darkness from being in a position of sunlight.

It was important to capture the movement of the different figures along with the quirky architectural features.

This popular traditional market is located in Kuwait City, between Abdullah Al-Mubarak, Abdullah Al-Salem & Palestine Streets. This market has been around for at least 200 years. The market was damaged during the Iraqi invasion in 1990; however, it was renovated and it got back its traditional flavor.
