Muttrah Corniche

£65.00

The first time we visited Oman we visited the souk along Muttrah Corniche. There was so much to take in. Like most visitors, we walked this seaside boardwalk for the views of the bay. However, turn your head and enjoy these 18th century wooden merchant houses.

It was several trips later that I finally took time to do a small sketchbook watercolour on location of these beautifully constructed white washed buildings which you can see here. This is one of several watercolours I’ve painted that capture old Muscat.

More Information

Stretching for 3 kilometres (1.8 miles) along the waterfront, the Muttrah Corniche is an elegant promenade lined with international restaurants, traditional cafes and enticing markets. The merchants’ houses depicted in this watercolour are some of the oldest residential buildings in Oman going back to the 18th century.

These are some of the oldest structures that remain in the city and were constructed by the Lawati who immigrated to Oman from India.

This small stretch of buildings is stunning. White washed, those intricate balconies and windows are enchanting by day, contrasting beautifully against the crisp blue skies.
