This is a small conceptual design painted in gouache for a larger Art Deco Style Golf poster of the King’s Course, Gleneagles by the late Ken Reed.

It features elements typical of my father’s gouache paintings.

Light swirling clouds are expertly painted with lively flowing brush strokes using just three shades of grey and a soft, gentle blue. Some of the sky colours are repeated in the building on the left and in the clothing of the figures.

The golfers provide a focal point and your eye begins to pick out the undulating course in the middle distance. In many ways, this is a more painterly style poster with some loose, accomplished brush strokes describing the helpful foreground shadow.

Gleneagles

There are not many names that shout Scottish golf at you more than ‘Gleneagles’ – it conjures up images of pheasants and moors, mountains and whisky. If you plan a trip there and the weather is kind then you will leave the romance intact.

The King’s Course Gleneagles, created by James Braid and opened in 1919, is a masterpiece of golf course design, which has tested the aristocracy of golf, both professional and amateur.

Set in Auchterarder, Perthshire, the King’s Course is certainly one of the most beautiful and exhilarating places to play golf in the world. All the holes on the King’s Course Gleneagles have evocative and historic Scots names. It’s probably the best moorland track in the world.

The Ryder and Solheim Cups

Described as one of the most beautiful golf courses in Perthshire, the courses at Gleneagles are as much fun for novices to play as they are for the pros. Also recent hosts of the Ryder and Solheim Cups.

Without a doubt the land that the King’s Course has been designed around is simply spectacular and the course largely makes the most of it. The holes use the natural hollows, water features and woods really well and it feels like this country was made for golf.
