Durham School v Rugby School Limited Edition | Durham School Rugby Limited Editions – Alan Reed
Durham School Rugby
The inaugural Veterrimi IV Rugby Tournament, hosted by Durham School. This painting captures the drama and excitement of the final between Durham School and Rugby School.
Although there was heavy rain for much of the day, fortunately, there were bursts of sunlight breaking through the heavy rain clouds which caused the autumnal trees to sparkle with colour.

Limited Edition Prints of Durham School
This print is this scene of Durham School v Rugby School playing in the final of a mini rugby tournament. The inaugural Veterrimi IV Rugby Tournament, hosted by Durham School, took place on Saturday 23 October. Despite the unrelenting rain, rugby fans turned out in their hundreds to be part of this special day. The two teams battled it out in the final, with the A J Dingle Trophy finally going to Rugby. As with other rugby games I’ve painted, I spent time recording aspects of the game in my sketchbook. I used the sketchbook studies and reference photographs to pull together these large watercolour. It captures the autumnal weather and the wonderful setting of the school as well as the action of the game.
Limited edition print
Already 9 of these prints have sold out of an edition of only 25 signed and numbered. Some have snapped up by parents of some of the boys who played that day. Other prints have been purchased by the schools and members of staff. The print is available online, either unframed, mounted in a deep edged mount (seen above) or framed. It can also be seen at my studio & gallery in Ponteland.
If you have one of my prints of this special match which evokes special memories which you would like to share, then please feel free to post a comment below. This is one of four limited edition prints I have produced over the years featuring Durham School in a rugby match.
Testimony:
Just to let you know that we are really pleased with the “Rugby v. Durham School” painting we ordered from you a few weeks ago.
We have bought it for our son’s 18th birthday as he is the Rugby School “no. 7” holding the ball in the painting!
We did have an email about the painting through the school a while ago, but couldn’t afford it at the time and we weren’t sure if Matthew would really want it, he then happened to mention how nice the painting was and how he would love to have a print of it, so i hoped you had some left and bought it quick!
Matthew was a awarded a sports scholarship to the school and his place there is also funded by the Arnold Foundation.
It was an honour for him to take part in this tournament, and as much an honour for you to have immortalised this moment for him in this beautiful watercolour.
