Getting reference for this painting involved a delightful walk from Craster one summer evening towards Dunstanburgh Castle. I have actually produced a video of me doing two watercolours of Dunstanburgh Castle, one in my sketchbook, the other on a watercolour block. The light was quite different on this occasion, with very little sun.
This painting is quite different from the one in the video. It captures the last rays of a summer evening catching the low clouds as the sea crashes in on the rocks. Overall, the scene is fresh and loose, the only area of detail being the crumbling architecture of the Castle.
There are 25 prints in the edition, available in larger sizes.

Commissions
In 2003 I received a series of commissions of Northumbrian Castles, one of which was Dunstanburgh Castle. The commissions involved going to the various locations to gather my own reference material. It was a delight to park the car at Craster then walk across the fields towards the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, taking in the ruins of the castle that overlook the sea.
Craster to Low Newton
The walk from Craster to Low Newton takes in Dunstanburgh Castle and is well worth the effort with stunning views along the way. Low Newton holds fond memories for me, as I prosed to my wife there.
