On a trip there in 2012 I recall taking the vaporetto across the dark waters of the lagoon to St Marks Square. This original watercolour has been inspired by my observations travelling on the vaporetto and my sketchbook studies and photographs of Venice.

Almost every canal in Venice is a view waiting to be photographed!
In this busy, almost claustrophobic scene, a shaft of sunlight cuts through the dark shadows to bring a sense of relief and hope.

Inspired by trips to Venice during the Venetain Carnival, this scene is an iconic view looking into the winter light from Rialto Bridge.
A lone gondolier is serenading a couple huddled together for warmth and romance.
Paintings of Venice are always popular with folk who have been fortunate enough to visit the city of romance.
I recall one of my painting trips when the weather was quite mixed and began to paint the scene before me in the rain. I could just make out the distinctive shapes of the people and buildings as I worked “wet on wet” on rough watercolour paper. SOLD

A sketch painted at 6am before the crowds arrived, provided the inspiration for this study looking towards San Giorgio Maggiore.
It also depicts the columns of Venice’s two patrons, Marco and Todaro which marks the official gateway to Venice.

Just received the print of St Marks Square. Thank you so much – it is perfect. And following our discussion re. frames, I’m really grateful that you managed to source the gold for me. The print is my ‘something thoughtful’ gift for my Husband’s 40th, who has memories of Aerobics at 5am in a similarly quiet St Marks Square when the boat he was on with the Royal Navy stopped there some 20 years ago! I’m hoping it’ll inspire him to take me there one day! Thanks again.
