Paintings and Prints of Italy. There’s a certain magic in Italy’s landscapes, architecture, and rich cultural heritage that has mesmerised travellers and artists for centuries. In the realm of capturing this beauty, Alan Reed’s beautiful prints of Italy including two Italian gems. ‘San Gimignano‘ and ‘Siena,’ has emerged as a true reflection of Italy’s allure. […]
The last time we visited the medieval city of Siena in Tuscany in Italy I spent time painting Piazza del Campo in my tiny sketchbook. These studies painted on location have been the inspiration for this larger original watercolour of the Campo.
The distinct formation of the Piazza del Campo Siena is just one of the reasons why UNESCO recognises Siena as the ideal embodiment of a medieval city. I have to say, from an artist’s perspective, it is a visual delight.
A wash of Rose Madder was used to set the tone and mood for the warm base colour of the distinctive architecture.
The figures basking in the warm Tuscan sun add to the lively scene. The wash of pale blue for the sky provides the necessary space for the eye to rest.
The main square, Piazza del Campo is commonly called “il Campo” and hosts major events, namely the Palio.
Il Campo is a unique area where tourists come to sit, after walking the romantic streets of Siena. (Limited edition Print)

February Morning in Siena My first visit to Siena was in February 1999. It was a wonderfully bright and crisp, sunny (but cold) morning. When we arrived, the shell shaped Piazza del Campo was very quiet. It’s where the famous Palio horse racing is held twice a year. It was just a little too cool to […]

New Business In a few weeks time, I will be celebrating my 40th Anniversary in business as an artist. In 1984 I went self employed as an artist/illustrator using the Enterprise Allowance Scheme. It was an initiative that came out during Margaret Thatcher’s Government. To qualify you had to be unemployed and have a business […]
Original Watercolour Paintings My Christmas Exhibition opened up on Saturday 11th December. The exhibition features new original paintings and limited edition prints that I’ve painted in-between painting commissions. Despite COVID restrictions, I’ve never been so busy, juggling my painting business with the Outreach work I do for North East Charity Junction 42. Online sales […]
An Original Watercolour Painting inspired by sketchbook watercolours painted on location in Florence.
I recall painting standing up, looking into the warm afternoon sunlight. I worked rapidly, recording figures walking in and out of the cool shadows.
