An original watercolour painting which was inspired by sketchbook studies made on location.
We had travelled to Sur in Oman for the second time. Omani men were performing the friendly Razah Dance of the Swords. The dancing was accompanied by chanting and drumming. I spent considerable time enjoying the process of observing the fluid movements and overall spectacle in the late afternoon sunlight.
I recall spending a wonderful afternoon in Sur sketching the Omani men taking part in the Razha traditional dancing.
The afternoon sunlight throws long shadows across the scene to highlight the sense of movement and drama. There’s elegance and poise as they wield their swords to the beat of the drums.

When we first visited Oman in 2007 we were fortunate to go on a day trip to the coastal town Sur, famous for its dhow building. I recall doing a couple of sketchbook watercolours of these distinctive sailing vessels in the heat of the day, the high sun catching the top of the clouds.
These studies of dhows became the inspiration for a number of studio paintings including one on gold leaf and this watercolour.

A limited edition print of Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain) in Oman.
The Original painting won “The Artist’s Prize” in the Royal Watercolour Society Competition for 2013.
We first went to Diana’s Point on Jebel Akhdar in Oman back in November 2007. The previous year I had received a number of commissions for a client in Oman depicting scenes around the Al Hajar Mountain range. I felt it would be important for me to visit this stunning landscape for myself. It was over a two hour drive from Muscat but it was worth it.
Diana’s Point is named after Princess Diana of Wales who visited Jebel Akhdar with Prince Charles in November 1986.
On my visits to Jebel Akhdar I’ve made number of sketchbook Studies which can be seen in my reproduction “Sketch Book of Oman“.
The locals grow pomegranates on the terraces which are watered by an ancient yet efficient irrigation system called Falaj.
Roman Architecture For over a year now I have been working on a number of painting commissions for an overseas client. He has a passion for Roman history and paintings depicting Roman architecture. To paint these subjects with the kind of insight and integrity that they deserve, I make sure that I gather sufficient original […]
For this particular view of the Roman Forum I awoke when it was still dark and walked briskly from our hotel room along the deserted streets of Rome to capture the first rays of sunlight striking the ancient columns of the Temple of Saturn.
I have to say, if you are visiting any busy city, it’s well worth the effort to get up early before the rest of the tourists take to the streets.
I wasted no time in whipping out my leather bound sketchbook to do a rapid watercolour study to get a feeling of the mood, light and general atmosphere of the Roman Forum. I used this sketch and my own reference photographs to paint the original watercolour from which this print has been taken from.
I rose just after 5am to paint a small watercolour in my sketchbook to capture the first rays of sunlight catching the ancient columns of the temple ruins.
Even though you can’t go inside the Roman Forum at this time in the morning, it’s possibly the best time of the day to see this historic site as there are no crowds to battle past and there is a distinct peace and calmness to the city. The early morning light brings a golden hue to the architectural ruins.
This original watercolour has been painted on hand made Fabriano paper from Italy. The rough texture of the paper brings out the translucency of the pigments.

Fine Art Original Watercolour Painting (Framed)
My studio watercolour of Ruwi in Oman is the result of spending many hours making sketchbook studies on location in Oman.
I’ve often risen when it was still dark to make sure I was in the right spot to capture the early morning light, however on this occasion it was a case of being in the right place to record the last throws of the middle eastern sunlight catching the distant hills. Read more on the Blog

Oman is full of remote villages, forts amd towers. Over the last few years many of these ancient dwellings have become much more accessible through modern roads.
It’s a stunning village in picturesque surroundings between the Western Hajar Mountains, half way up the mountain path connecting Al Hamra to Nakal/Al Rustaq through Wadi Bani Awf, and is adjacent to “Snake Canyon”
Bilad Satt is definitely worth a visit on any trip to Oman
This large original watercolour painting has been inspired by the off road journey I made there when I was able to make a sketch book study and take a number of photographs.
It has been painted on hand-made Fabriano Esportazione which is no longer being manufactured.
The very rough textured surface is incredible to paint on in watercolour. You can create some amazing textures and “wet on wet” effects.
