Victoria Street, Edinburgh – Limited Edition Print

£65.00

A dark, threatening sky was always going to be a prerequisite to any painting of the architecture to ensure that the sunlit stone work above the colourful shop facades stood out to provide suitable weight to balance out the heavy shadow areas on the left of the painting.

I received Victoria Street this afternoon and it’s just so perfect. My wee red car’s in it too!

I know “my” Alan will love it. It’s so good to know I have a wedding present for him that is just right and has such special meaning to us both.
Thank you so much for the Heriot’s print too. It resulted in a happy “awww” from my kids. They have many happy memories of being at that school. How kind of you. Your work is really beautiful……and the framing is just what I wanted.
Thank you again. A Chalmers – Edinburgh

Prints of Edinburgh

This scene of Victoria Street, Edinburgh depicts a dark, threatening sky. It was always going to be a prerequisite to any painting of the architecture. And to ensure that the sunlit stone work above the colourful shop facades. It stood out to provide suitable weight to balance out the heavy shadow areas on the left of the painting.

The Creation of Victoria Street is one of Edinburgh’s most recognisable and picturesque locations, its elegant curve graced by a series of colourful shop fronts, making it a favourite choice of filmmakers and photograph enthusiasts alike. Constructed between 1829 and 1834, Victoria Street was one of several major improvements to the Old Town, designed to improve access around the city; previously, the only way to access the Lawnmarket and Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket was via an awkward and steep passageway.

Fabriano Paper

I’ve painted this watercolour on a lovely hand made paper from Fabriano.  Although expensive, the heavily texture of the paper makes it a delight to paint on.  Because the architecture is so colourful, I’ve kept the sky colour simple and without too much fuss. I’ve also made sure that the same palette of the sky is repeated in other parts of the painting. For example, the shadows being cast by the buildings have been painted with the same Payne’s Grey mix.
