The Arch dominates the skyline of St Louis in Missouri, the gateway to the west. We waited in the long queue to go up to the top in the carriages but suddenly there was a fault so we didn’t make it.
The monument is 192 metres high and is the tallest monument in America.

New York City
In 2008 we travelled to America see our youngest granddaughter just after her birth. After spending time in The Arch St Louis, we spent several days in New York City. It was an amazing time. Armed with my sketchbook, I made several studies of some of its famous landmarks. I had to have a go at painting the Empire State Building. Top of the Rock
I took two trips to the Top of the Rock, one during the day, the other at dusk. I did a sketchbook study at day time but used photographs to capture the city lights coming on. It was a beautiful sight to watch the city change from natural light to artificial light. The Empire State Building lit up became the focal point .
Prints of New York and St Louis
Back in the studio I did 3 watercolours of New York from my reference. One was of the Flatiron Building.
The other two were from the Top of the Rock, one of which I published as a limited edition print titled New York, Dusk.
