Arabian Dhows Gold Leaf

Oil Painting on Gold Leaf depicting Arabian Dhows against the backdrop of a sunset at Sur, Oman.

Painting on gold leaf in oils is a very satisfying process. The 22 carat gold leaf contrasts beautifully against the paint and yet there is harmony with the two mediums.

Read Alan Reed’s Story of how he began painting Dhows on Gold Leaf. I did two quite different scenes, one of the Grand Mosque in Oman, the other of some Arabian Dhowsat low tide in Sur, Oman.

I sold the Grand Mosque to a client in Oman, however, this one of the dhows is available to purchase. Other original paintings and prints of the Gulf can be seen on my website.

Sur, Oman

Sur in Oman is such a beautiful peaceful place to visit.

This prominent city enjoys a wonderful coastal location looking out into the Gulf of Oman. It’s situated just under 100 miles southwest of the country’s capital of Muscat. Being next to the sea, Sur has enjoyed a long history of being an important stop for sailors. Its thriving shipbuilding industry still remains intact today.

Most visitors covering Oman normally reserve one or two days for Sur. Despite its compact size, it still packs plenty of activities to keep you busy. Take a stroll around the town centre to see the traditional whitewashed stone houses and sleepy local life.

Head to the shorefront when the tide is out to see locals kicking a ball about or enjoying a coffee on the sand.

Look out for the turtles here too, which often make an appearance at night to lay their eggs before slinking back off into the ocean.
