I rose just after 5am to paint a small watercolour in my sketchbook. I was able to capture the first rays of sunlight catching the ancient columns of the temple ruins.
You can’t go inside the Roman Forum at this time in the morning. But it’s possibly the best time of the day to see this historic site. As there are no crowds to battle past and there is a distinct peace and calmness to the city. The early morning light brings a golden hue to the architectural ruins. Colosseum Interior, Rome is another Original Watercolour of Rome painted on Fabriano paper that I managed to get from an original paper mill in Sorrento. Standing inside the Colosseum on the ancient stone steps, it’s easy to let your imagination wander. And think on the events that took place almost 2000 years ago in this massive Roman arena.
