Duomo in Florence

The Duomo in Florence is very impressive for many reasons. I remember the first time I set eyes on it on a crisp, sunny October morning in 1998. It was at the end of Via Panzani before joining Via de Cerretani.

All of the on the spot watercolours I have painted have been from an elevated position. This includes the one I did in preparation for the studio painting above. It was taken from Palazzo Pitti that overlooks the Giardino di Boboli in Firenze. Buy Prints of Florence to decorate the walls of your home or office.

Any trip to Italy should include a visit to Florence. This beautiful City is best seen on foot and these three different itineraries take you through its winding streets to discover the main attractions in the city of the Renaissance. Along the way, stop at some of our recommendations for a gelato, a short detour, lunch and more.

Sketchbook

I recall painting a close up view of the Duomo, Florence in my sketchbook.  The view was from the rooftop of a nearby hotel in 2004. I was able to gain a much deeper appreciation of the Gothic styling of The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore.

Work began on its construction in 1296 to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and was completed some 140 years later. The dome, engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi, remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.  A few years ago there was a documentary on TV about its design and remarkable construction.  Various architectural experts and engineers were being interviewed on the programme. They were all still in debate as to how it was actually built.

I’ve climbed the steps to the top to see close up the incredible painting work on the inside of the Duomo.  I also took in the breathtaking views of the city. However, the best view of all is from Piazza Michelangelo. You can see a painting I did from that vantage point on my website.
