Bamburgh Castle is steeped in history and was often the target for marauding Scots. Over the centuries it has been restored by its various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally bought by the Victorian industrialist William Armstrong, who completed the restoration. Today the castle still belongs to the Armstrong family and is opened to the public. It also hosts weddings and corporate events.

Bamburgh Castle being the most filmed fortress, it starred as the magnificent Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey’s 2015 Christmas special. It was featured as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films and was used for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
