An original watercolour painting of Auguste Rodin's famous marble sculpture "The Kiss"
Using watercolour, arguably the most difficult of all mediums, and a limited palate, I've wanted to capture the coolness and hard form of white marble.
This original watercolour has been painted on hand-made Fabriano Esportazione which is no longer being manufactured. The very rough textured surface is incredible to paint on in watercolour. You can create some amazing textures and "wet on wet" effects.
I've been to the Fabriano paper Mill in the Marches region of Italy on two occasions to purchase their beautiful paper and leather bound sketchbooks.
I started to use their sketchbooks to paint "en plein air" just after my first visit to their factory in 2002 . After using up my sketchbook supplies from Fabriano, I now make my own leather bound sketchbooks, a very rewarding process.
Also available as a limited edition print.
A charcoal study of Emanuela, a young Italian girl from Florence.
For many years I've practised the regular discipline of life drawing to sharpen my skills at drawing from observation.
Using a limited palette of Lead White, Yellow Ochre, Light Red and Lamp Black on a tinted board I use Sight Size to ensure an accurate rendering of form, tone and colour.
Drawing with the brush rather than outlining in pencil creates brush marks that are fresh and expressive.
The tinted background often acts as a shadow tone on the flesh which you can see here on the models thigh.
This can be seen throughout this painting, particularly the models arms and legs. There was also a darker background than usual which helped to create strong form and shapes.

This is a much quicker study than usual which has a very lively feel.
The dark background helps to define the pose along with the vertical lines of the props.
The tinted background often acts as a mid tone on the flesh which you can see in various parts of the study.
