Sur, Oman

Painting of Sur in Oman, a coastal town renowned for its building of dhows.

I remember the day as being incredibly hot and the sky being an intense blue as I was sketching dhows not far from where I painted the old watch tower in this painting.

Thames Sunrise, London

Over the years I have spent considerable time studying sunrises and the way light affects cityscapes.

This painting of the Thames showing the city of London skyline is the fruit of such studies.

Thank you so much for your prompt response. We worked in the City of London and on the Thames (my husband was a Tug captain) for most of our working lives and you are quite right the skyline has changed - but your paintings of the river and the city under a "moody" sky is still a typical scene enjoyed by so many Londeners every day of their working lives as they cross Waterloo Bridge.Dear Alan

Your painting is in our Sitting Room above the fireplace and gives us daily pleasure- thank you so much!

Best wishes and kind regards,  Mr & Mrs P - London

The Angel, Gateshead

When the Angel was first erected, the area around it looked very much like a building site.

It had also been raining heavily which added to the drama of the scene.

The Arch dominates the skyline of St Louis in Missouri, the gateway to the west.

The monument is 192 metres high and is the tallest monument in America.

The Artist's Wife, Venice Italy

Venice will always have a place in our hearts, the city of love and romance.

This painting of my wife Susan in St Mark's Square, Venice is one of my favourites.

The Bigg Market, Newcastle

The original watercolour painting of the Bigg Market from which this print was taken, was stolen from an art gallery in Newcastle in 1993.

This limited edition print of the Bigg Market captures the ornate Art Nouveau architecture of the Half Moon Inn and market day itself.

The Duomo, Florence, Italy

The Duomo, a masterpiece of engineering, dominates any view of Florence’s skyline.

A small 7” x 5” watercolour painted from the Boboli Gardens was the inspiration for this larger watercolour.

The city was voted, according to a 2007 poll, the most desirable destination for tourists in the world.

The Pantheon, Rome

The Pantheon Rome is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Rome and was commissioned by Marcus Agrippa about the time of the Bible’s Book of Acts.

Agrippa’s inscription can be seen on the portico which always reminds me of Acts chapters 25-26 where the Apostle Paul is brought before King Agrippa to be tried.

Theatre Royal at Night, Newcastle

Prints of the Theatre Royal are always popular but I’ve seen very few artists paint it at night which is when most theatre lovers see it.

Artificial light is not easy to capture convincingly in paint, particularly in watercolour, however, I'm pleased to say that this scene has worked well.

The key to painting at night is keeping the palate simple and the colours clean and fresh in terms of application.

For this watercolour I used Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow, Purple, Paynes Grey and French Ultramarine for most of the painting with touches of Scarlet Lake and Windsor Green for some of the details on the figures and traffic lights.

The original watercolour sold many years ago but I do have other original paintings of the Theatre Royal on view online and at my Studio & Gallery in Ponteland.
