River Tyne Sunset Print

One of the first commissions I received when I went self employed back in 1984 was to do two original watercolours of the River Tyne near North Shields Fish Quay for a leading North East businessman.

Over the years I’ve enjoyed going back to the reference material I gathered back then to do fresh interpretations of the same scenes. My watercolour style and technique has changed over the years but it still ends up being a joy to tackle paintings of the Tyne which capture a bygone era.

This painting has been inspired by the studies I made of the River Tyne when there was so much more shipping and industry.

River Tyne Sunset – Original Watercolour Painting

One of my first commissions when I went self employed as an artist back in 1984 was from a major North East Company who asked me to do some paintings capturing the industry on the Tyne.

This is a more recent work based on the reference I gathered from the banks of the Tyne back in the 1980’s. The big sky which features a winter sunset adds drama to a scene that captures a bygone era.

It’s a very big watercolour by any standards so keeping control over large fluid washes is very demanding, particularly when using strong contrasing colours.

River Tyne Sunset

In one of my recent blog posts I talked about a commission I received when I first went full time as an artist. This was back in 1984 at the age of 22. It was to do two watercolours of the River Tyne near North Shields for a leading North East businessman. He wanted me […]

Tyne Bridge and Quayside

Tyne Bridge and Quayside

In 2017 I received a commission to do a very large oil painting of the Angel of the North. The Angel’s wings were coated with 22 carat gold leaf.

This inspired me to then paint the Tyne Bridge and Quayside using gold leaf.

You can watch a short video on YouTube of me painting some of the details of the Tyne Bridge, quayside Painting.

A Big River

Dark Skies over a Big River – Original Watercolour Painting

I’ve often observed dark threatening clouds hang omniously over the River Tyne with sunlight bursting through, creating patches of light reflected on the water.

Watercolour is the ideal medium to capture these fleeting moments of nature.

This simple but effective watercolour has been painted on hand made paper from Fabriano in Italy. I’ve been to the Fabriano paper Mill in the Marches region of Italy on two occasions to purchase their beautiful paper and leather bound sketchbooks.

The rough texture of the paper is ideal for creating the dark moody clouds to contrast the bright light sparkling on the River Tyne.

Tyne Bridges

Tyne Bridges, Snow Shower – Original Watercolour Painting

An original watercolour of Newcastle’s Tyne Bridges and Quayside with it’s famous bridges captured in a swirling snow shower.

The dark moody sky adds extra drama to the composition, the loosness of the washes contrasting with the more considered rendering of the iconic architecture.

Newcastle Tyne Bridge from the keep.jpeg

Newcastle Tyne Bridge from the Keep – Limited Edition Print

This scene of the Tyne Bridge was painted in 1994. This particular print has now become historical, capturing the Quayside, Newcastle as it was at the end of the 20th Century.

So much of this scene has changed and yet its how many people remember it featuring the Tuxedo Princess.
