Newcastle Quayside on Gold Leaf

Newcastle Quayside on Gold Leaf is one of a number of painting commissions from a new client. To begin with, they purchased an original oil painting of Arabian Dhows painted on gold leaf. They really liked one of my watercolours available as a limited edition print title “Tyne Bridges, Summer Sunset”. The question was, “could it be painted oils on gold leaf to match their one of Arabian Dhows?” The answer was, of course, yes.

Painted in an Art Deco style, it depicts the Newcastle Quayside and many of its iconic landmarks. The Millennium Bridge is the first of several interlocking curves that contrast the fluid cloud formations. The colours of the clouds and architecture are reflected in the moving waters of the River Tyne.

Working on gold leaf in this style takes twice as long as most oil paintings. You have to give each colour two coats to get the right depth to the pigment. However, the results are worth it. Also, the gold leaf takes on all kinds of wonderful effects depending on the lighting conditions of the room where the painting is placed. Contrast the two photographs I took of the same painting.

Needless to say, the clients are delighted with their paintings which have transformed the look of their living room. If you would like to find out more about how to commission a painting then please contact me.
