A classic Grey Street snow scene with busy Christmas shoppers and their umbrellas. I’ve used a limited palette for the architecture and sky however a touch of Cadmium red for the traditional British red pillar box and Anya provides a focus point to this wintery cityscape. A delicate wash of Rose Madder brings a little warmth to the sky.
Newcastle’s Theatre Royal provides us with a reminder of Christmas Pantomimes. I’ve also painted this view on a rainy day using an even more limited palette. It works equally as well with a very dark ominous sky full of rain clouds.
I’ve deliberately left out the Christmas decorations that light up Grey Street at night.
One of my watercolours of the Theatre Royal was used as their own Christmas card one year. It was viewed from the other direction. I still included one of my granddaughters wearing a red coat. I repainted it and it became one of my best selling limited edition prints.
The original watercolour painting has been sold but it is available a s a limited edition print.
