I entered 4 paintings for the Bath Prize 2011. These included the winning painting of the Circus and the one above of the Pump Room in the Snow.
My paintings can currently be seen at the Octagon, Milsom Place, Bath until 27th October 10am-5pm. An auction sale of all the paintings entered will take place at the Guildhall, High Street, Bath on Friday 28th October, starting at 7pm.
I do love the Bath Prize. Last year I came runner up in the same competition with my painting of the Royal Crescent. It was such fun spending time in Bath, painting on location and gathering reference material.
Some of you may recognise two of the figures in the painting of the Pump Room. One is the little girl in the red coat and her grandmother. They appear in some of my paintings of Grey Street and Newcastle’s Theatre Royal.
I’ve used a limited palette of Yellow Ochre, Paynes Grey and Lamp Black for almost all of this painting of the Pump Room. The exception of course, is a touch of Cadmium Red for the red coat. The effects of snow have been created by flicking masking fluid over the paper before commencing the painting process. I’ve also scratched out some of the snow flakes by using a scalpel.
